No doubt a lot of Americans gave only passing attention to Alberto Gonzales' repeated, contemptuous and contemptible testimony in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee last spring, unsure why the wonkier firebrands amongst us were worked up into a lather by it all. What was at issue, in sum, was the notion that Americans, all Americans, are governed by the same rule of law, or whether some can simply make up new rules to suit them and their friends, to maintain power and to make inordinate profits by gaming the system. It is the equivalent of most people in your office working their asses off every week to do their jobs well, maybe get a raise and a promotion, then the boss's smirking fratboy son graduates college and gets appointed your middle-manager, and there isn't shit you can do about it.
